"Ex Ovo Omnia" - VASCO ARAÚJO
In both of the Gallery´s rooms, the artist will be presenting four works entitled: "Augusta", "Álbum" "Trabalhos para nada, e as árvores morrem de pé" (Wors for nothing; And the Trees Die Standing) and e "Ex Ovo Omnia", the work that lends its name to the exhibition.
The video "Augusta", was shot in Washington and is based on Aristophanes´ comedy The Birds. It features a dialogue between two stone lions on the establishment of a new city and an ideology to oppose the oppressive regime of the Old City. Despite the attempt at newness, the new city proposed, the ways it is to function socially, and the new ideology that governs it turn out to be as oppressive and imperialistic as the Old City's. "Álbum", an installation, presents a dinner table with thirteen encrusted photo albums. In each album, the viewer sees spaces reserved for the pictures; but no photos are present. The spaces are captioned with small phrases that hauntingly hark back to someone's erstwhile relationship with the rest of his or her missing family.
"Working in Vain; All Trees Die Standing" presents the story of a woman who lives in fear of being ignored on the social scene. To avoid this social obscurity, she makes use of a walking stick she inherited and uses it to stand out in her social milieu.
"Yes...This is precisely the point I find most interesting. Even though, right away, I understood that I will not come to any conclusion, a thought and an action emerge: a woman should use gloves and a cane if she wants to be talked about. As I proved to myself, this solves the whole problem of going unnoticed."
"Ex Ovo Omnia" is an installation that shows a family tree and a child that is psychologically disturbed because of his particular family background.
"Some people inherit houses. Some inherit paintings or violin bows insured for a fortune; some inherit a Japanese tansu or a famous name. I inherited a recessive gene on my fifth chromossome and a string of family pearls that is very, very rare---almost as rare as my genealogy."
In this exhibition, the artist discusses topics such as genetic heritance, interpersonal, social and ideological legacies. He discusses the creation of new models that question our evolution as human beings, both on a psychological and social level.
Vasco Araújo has held a number of individual exhibitions: "Vasco Araújo: Per-Versions", the Boston Center for the Arts, Boston (2008); "About Being Different", Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, Newcastle (2007); "Pathos", Domus Artium 2002, Salamanca (2006); "Dilema", S.M.A.K. in Ghent (2005) and the Serralves Museum in Oporto (2000). He has also taken part in a number of collective showings such as "Artes Mundi, Wales Internacional Visual Art Exhibition and Prize", National Museum Cardiff, Cardiff (2008); "Kara Walker and Vasco Araújo: Reconstruction", Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, (2007); "Drei Farben - Blau", XIII Rohkunstbau, Grobleuthen (2006); "The Experience of Art" (Venice Biennale, 2005) and "Dialetics of Hope" (Moscow Biennale, 2005).
His work have been published in several books and catalogues. His works can be found in a number of private and public collections such as the Centre Pompidou, Musée d'Art Modern (France); Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation (Portugal); Fundación Centro Ordóñez-Falcón de Fotografía - COFF (Spain); Museo Nacional Reina Sofia, Centro de Arte (Spain); Serralves Foundation (Portugal); Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (USA).
