SHIRIN NESHAT nasceu em 1957, em Qazvin, (Irão). Atualmente, vive e trabalha em Nova Iorque, EUA.
As fotografias e vídeos de Shirin abordam a liberdade individual sobre o ataque da opressão das ideologias sociais. Durante grande parte da sua carreira, Neshat esteve exilada do Irão, pelo que o seu olhar enquanto 'outsider', enfatiza o rigor que a lei Islâmica tem sobre as mulheres iranianas e sobre o seu dia a dia. Mais do que ícones de opressão, as mulheres são indivíduos complexos com desejos e ambições enquanto equilibram os seus pensamentos e emoções privada e o envolvimento político, público.
A artista ganhou alguns dos mais prestigiados prémios para filme como, o First International Prize na 48ª. Venice Biennale (1999); Hiroshima City Museum of Art, Hiroshima, Japão (2005); Silver Lion no Festival de Cinema de Veneza (2009); Cinema for Peace Special Award, Hessischer Filmpreis, Alemanha (2009), entre outros.
